P and O Aurora accidents

Date, location  Accident / Incident Report
93-day World Cruise 2009, March P and O Aurora cruise ship accidents, incidents at ShipCruise.org

  • Aurora experienced propulsion system problems after Sydney AU, and continued to Auckland NZ for repairs. On March 12 (en route to Hawaii), 600+ passengers officially protest after Aurora failed to dock and skipped 5 ports of call (3 in NZ, 2 Pacific Islands).
  • P&O offered of compensation, some passengers threatened the line with legal actions.
103-day World Cruise 2005, January
  • En route Southampton to Funchal, Madeira, ms Aurora experienced propulsion problems, world cruise (1700 pax) was cancelled. P&O donated all the onboard food to Southampton charities. Aurora sailed to Bremerhaven to enter dry-dock at Meyer Werft for propulsion motor replacement.
31 October 2003
  • On her Eastern Mediterranean cruise, ms Aurora experienced major Norovirus outbreak (500+ passengers). Guests were denied disembarkation in Piraeus (Athens) where Aurora was held in quarantine (the ship left port on 31 October with medical supplies being loaded). Sick passengers were also denied disembarkation in Dubrovnik, Croatia and in Gibraltar (UK). One passenger died from heart attack (not related to the virus outbreak). Spain decided to close the Gibraltar-Spain border for a few hours while Aurora was docked in Gibraltar, causing diplomatic tension between Spain and UK.
September 11, 2001, NYC WTC attack
  • On the fatal date, ms Aurora was located ~80 ml south of NYC and ~20 ml east of Atlantic City NJ. A conference was hosted on board (major IT firms executives private  charter, NYC on Sept 9). After the attacks, USCG helicopters and marine vessels were guarding the ship due to safety reasons. Instead stopping in NYC (Manhattan Pier 53 terminal), Aurora sailed to Boston MA for passenger disembarkation.
World Cruise 2001, March
  • On the Aurora’s first World Cruise and while sailing through Taiwan Strait, the ship was called to help ms Pamela Dream ship (Cambodian vessel) capsized in rough seas (5m / 16ft waves). Rescue boats were lunched but they retrieve only 3 survivors. During the rescue operation, one of the ship’s propellers was damaged by flotsam (Pamela Dream wreckage/cargo afloat), repairs were done in Singapore.
May 1, 2000
  • On her 14-day Mediterranean cruise from Southampton, Aurora experienced a major propulsion problem (propeller shaft bearing damaged). The cruise was cancelled, on May 3 passengers were disembarked in Southampton, P&O offered full refund and compensation (total worth ~£6 mill). The ship sailed to “Blohm + Voss” (Germany) for dry-dock repairs, returned to service on May 15.
April 27, 2000 (christening ceremony)
  • P and O Aurora was christened by HRH Princess Anne, but on the naming ceremony she failed to shatter the champagne bottle when it hit the ship (the bottle fell unopened into the water). This is considered a very bad omen.
